Monument of shame

The writer Arnold Zweig already said 1925 from the books Emil Julius Gumbels (1891-1966), they would "shine into the blood cellars of the German reaction". How right branch lay with it is to be read in the life way Gumbels, mathematician in Heidelberg, statistician and political publicist. A small but very knowledgeable exhibition at the University Museum in Heidelberg follows his life with photos, short biographies, personal documents and files. From the liberal-conservative Heidelberg professorships to the National Socialists, Gumbel did not forgive and remember his accusations against the German nationalist reaction, right-wing nationalism, the Reichswehr, and National Socialism.

In the entrance hall of the museum are on a bronze plaque the names of the "under the National Socialist dictatorship disenfranchised and expelled professors" listed. Gumbel's name is missing, for this Arnold Bergstraesser (1896-1964), one of the founders of political science after 1945, was called, who had to exile because of his Jewish ancestry 1937, but already 1954 could return to his chair in Heidelberg.
